Today on MTG Salvation it was revealed that Preminent Captain is being reprinted in Magic 2015. As someone who started playing Magic during the Lorwyn block, I am very familiar with Preeminent Captain. Kithkins were a huge tribal deck back in those days, and I’ve always been a huge fan of Soldiers, in general – obviously, my favorite planeswalker is Elspeth, Knight-Errant. Today, he’s only been seeing play in Commander Soldier Tribal decks, but he’s still a pretty valuable card from Morningtide.

Preeminent Captain is a 2/2 Kithkin Soldier that costs 2W to cast. Not only does he have First Strike, but whenever he declares an attack, you may put a Soldier creature card from your hand onto the battlefield tapped and attacking. It doesn’t even preclude dropping additional copies of itself onto the board.

Now being brought back into Standard, Preeminent Captain should be seeing play again. There are a ton of playable Soldiers in Standard right now. Granted some of the best Soldiers available right now, Precinct Captain and Loxodon Smiter, will be going out of Standard soon, but Theros block is chock full of them.

Brimaz, King of Oreskos is the best Soldier in Standard, by far. But there are a bevy of other playable Soldiers: Akroan Skyguard, Archetype of Courage, Boros Elite, Favored Hoplite, Hero of Iroas, Soldier of the Pantheon, and Vanguard of Brimaz are all playable White Soldiers.  Akroan Crusader, Akroan Hoplite, and Battlewise Hoplite are all good Heroic Soldiers. Plus, as stated earlier, you will be able to play additional Preeminent Captains off of his ability.

Two other Legendary Creatures that haven’t seen much play at all in Standard, Anax and Cymede and Daxos of Meletis, are also both Soldiers that can benefit from having this Captain around. Also, before Gatecrash rotates out, Spark Trooper will be a nice little 6/1 surprise with trample and lifelink to throw into play. What he does is accelerate the board state, and White Weenie and Aggro players will be quite happy to take advantage of an effect like this. With all of the pump spells available in Standard to keep your Captains alive, you’re going to potentially get a few free creature summons out of this guy.

Preeminent Captain is a great card that’s needed a reprint for quite a long time. Maybe now that it will be more widely available, more players will be willing to brew around this guy again.

How will you use Preeminent Captain?

Stonehewer Giant is possibly my favorite card out of Morningtide. As a 5-drop he’s far more balanced than the now infamous Stoneforge Mystic, despite the fact he constantly searches and throws equipment onto your creatures, eliminating even the necessity of paying equip costs. However, as he hasn’t been in standard in a very long time, I prefer to use him in my mono-white Kemba, Kha Regent Commander deck, alongside Stoneforge Mystic for my equipment tutoring. He’s a great card in EDH, 5 mana not being difficult to get to, and was a good card even in Standard when it was legal. They still go for 3-5 USD these days, so don’t have too many qualms about picking him up, he’s worth it.
