Soul of Shandalar is 4RR for a 6/6 Avatar with first strike, with a pretty impressive set of abilities.
For 3RR, Soul of Shandalar deals 3 damage to target player and 3 damage to up to one target creature that player controls, and his “exile-from-graveyard” ability is the same.
Out of the cycle so far, I feel that Soul of Shandalar and Soul of New Phyrexia are easily the most standard playable. These Souls are going to be replacing the old M11/M12/M13 titans and these two in particular are doing their job fantastically. Between the 6/6 first strike and the ability to throw 3 damage at creatures and players makes it very difficult to effectively block this creature. The only real downside I see with this particular creature is the mana insensitivity of 5 mana in red, but with the correct support I don’t think it will be too big of a problem.
Again, I’m excited to play this card in Commander, and most likely Standard play, depending on how red looks this block.
Until next time.
