In a Standard format where Elspeth, Sun’s Champion and her Soldier tokens are wreaking havoc, mono-White decks will now have the return of an old Mono-White Commander favorite, Mass Calcify. It’s basically a one-sided board-wipe, as long as you’re only running White creatures. Mono-White devotion, anyone?

Mass Calcify was originally printed in Shadowmoor. I don’t recall that it saw any if at all Standard play, but it definitely has seen plenty of Commander play over the years. In the current Standard meta that this card will be entering, mono-White decks definitely have some staying power. Brimaz, King of Oreskos and his Cat friends aren’t going anywhere. Nyx-Fleece Ram continues to hold the ground with its 0/5 body. Also, your blue/white, green/white, red/white, and black/white creatures stick around.

But seven mana is a lot of mana. Yes, having Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx makes this card a lot easier to cast. Honestly, though, by the time you have seven mana, if you need to play this, it will basically give you the game.

Without Precinct Captain and Boros Reckoner around to fuel Mono-White Devotion, however, it’s hard to say just how much Standard play Mass Calcify will see. At the very least, the supply of this sorcery will be greatly increased for everyone’s Mono-White Commander toolbox.
